My politics travel with me as does my little point and shoot camera, so I couldn't resist talking to this group of protestors while sightseeing in the city of Charlotte, NC even though their numbers were few and passers-by mostly ignored them.
The fellow on the megaphone reminded me of an evangelist in one of my first videos posted on DKos and C&L so I wondered what, if anything, may have changed in their community since then. It turns out that their volume has been turned way up and they're much more comfortable expressing extreme views now.
For example, one fellow told me, any woman that has an abortion should be executed. One other younger fellow thought it cruel to abort a rapist's child. Sharron Angle, Rand Paul and Ken Buck think that, too. Find yourself pregnant with your rapist's child? Well just use that lemon to make lemonade, Missy.
I'd never heard such things from mainstream evangelicals (or candidates) in public, before now.
I learned that the obsession with the sex lives of uncontrollable women continues and the frustration these evangelicals have with these kind of women is shown clearly in this footage. After the camera disc was full, my conversation with the younger fellow continued. He went on about me not being raised well and dismissed my opinions as coming from someone who was once Christian but was led astray by parents who rejected the word of God. An Unchristian who succumbed to Evil Secular Society or Whatever. He seemed disappointed when I told him I was saved*. And once you're saved, you're issued a "Get-Out-of-Purgatory-Free" card that never expires no matter what you do down here on earth. Damn good deal. See ya at the pearlies!
The question I was interested in getting an answer to was, "Is it OK for the government to have jurisdiction over your reproductive rights?" Put in a simpler form, "Is it OK for the government to tell you how many children you can have?" The answer is no. Easy enough. And they agreed. But I suppose the correlation between allowing the government to restrict your reproductive rights and their fight to allow the government to force you to have your rapist's or your own father's baby, never occurred to them. In this case, they not only want Uncle Sam involved, they want him on Ovary Watch 24/7.
Interestingly, after some exhaustive debating, one woman said she wasn't lobbying for laws against abortion - so I found agreement with her, but I don't know if she was sincere or just confused.
What do you think?
*As a kid, I'd tag along with the neighbors to Sunday school. There I learned that if you hadn't accepted Jesus Christ as your lord and savior, you would burn in hell forever. You needed to be saved in order to go to heaven and once saved, you would be safe in the hands of the lord forever. So I stayed after school and got saved. But I didn't feel any safer. So I got saved again the next Sunday just to be sure it took.
